QUICK CUTS: Favorite Superhero Movies
With Michael Arruda, L.L. Soares, and Daniel Keohane
With the release of THOR, the latest Marvel superhero movie, we asked ourselves: What’s our favorite superhero movies?
Here are our answers:
Daniel Keohane:
I thought the first SPIDER-MAN (2002) and the second X-MEN (2003) movies were two of the best. Personally, I also thought DAREDEVIL (2003) kicked butt.
Michael Arruda:
My top 3 are:
1. THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)
2. IRON MAN (2008)
3. KICK-ASS (2010)
L.L. Soares:
What’s your favorite superhero movie (s)?
It’s hard to choose just one, but these are three of the best:
a) SIN CITY (2005) – not really superheroes, but based on the comic book series by Frank Miller. Definitely the most stylish comic book movie so far.
b) WATCHMEN (2009) – compared to the comic book by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, there’s no way it couldn’t be a letdown. Compared to other comic book movies, it’s pretty great, especially the scenes with Rorscach.
c) PUNISHER WAR ZONE (2008) – It took three Punisher movies to finally get it right. This one is great because it’s violent as hell, and earns it’s hard R rating. It’s maybe the only time Marvel Comics decided to take a risk, cut loose, and do something that wasn’t safe and mainstream. And I bet you this never happens again. Ray Stevenson is pretty much perfect as Frank Castle and Dominic West turns in a pretty crazy performance as his nemesis, Jigsaw. And the ending is an entertaining bloodbath. This is probably by favorite of the three.
