Good one, comrades... I loved the premise, although I still had a bit of a tough time believing that all four of our heroes would vote to go on the extreme tour... The characters were well-drawn and had good dialog - I thought the dynamic between the brothers rang true... ANd I agree on them going places out of necessity rather than just to check out dark and dangerous places. But I was disappointed that we never saw the face of that ultra-creepy little girl... The end was a bit meh *SPOILER* - why not just shoot the final girl or give her a lethal injection - that would have been far kinder... As someone who loves EFX makeup, I thought the inhabitants might look more like the fish in their facial features - little (or no) eyes, lots of teeth - come to think of it, there was that creepy ballerina in Cabin in the Woods - brrrrrr!

Fun column.

Interestingly enough, Andre Morrell also played Dr. Watson in Hammer's THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (1959) alongside Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes.

Thanks, Colleen - I've always thought the "new wave" of Asian horror presented some disturbing ideas that pushed (or broke through) the envelope... Nice to see this has always been the case. I will check it out!

I was kinda disappointed in it. Good moments, but here's my breakdown:

MOTHER OF TOADS by Richard Stanley - I liked the look and feel of it, and of course it's always cool to see Catriona MacColl. But the story seemed really cliche to me. Like I'd seen in a hundred times before.

I LOVE YOU by Buddy Giovinazzo, Wow. This one knocked my socks off. No one does bleak like buddy.

WET DREAMS by Savini - Okay. Some good imagery. But seemed a little superficial.

THE ACCIDENT by Douglas Buck - Kind of quiet and slight and you're right, it doesn't fit in with the mood of the rest of the movie at all.

VISION STAINS BY Karim Hussain - Interesting idea and a lot of people have a phobia about needles and eyes, so some good imagery. But the story itself seemed kind of flimsy.

SWEETS by David Gregory - Fun idea. Silly story.

And I didn't care much for the wraparound story in the theater with Udo. Didn't really add much to the movie.

Another overall weak anthology movie. I guess it's really hard to do these things and have consistently great installments. But man, that Giovinazzo one will stay with me.

Awesome column, Nick, and I've now got to track some of these down - stumbled on BLOOD FREAK late one night and just watched with my mouth hanging open - there is something so compelling about horror with such low budget sensibilities, like SHE FREAK, where you feel almost like a voyeur, knowing that the lives of some (or all) of the stars is as grim and depressing as their characters' lives... Also saw NOTLD late one night when my parents were out - I also laughed at my little brother for being scared of horror films (he made me change THE TINGLER to some kiddie movie and I held a grudge), but Romero's zombies scared the crap out of me - left a few lights on and made sure that closet door was SHUT!
